Division of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students

Introduction:

NationalTaiwanNormalUniversity Division of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students, officially merged with NationalTaiwanNormalUniversity in 2006, was called National University of Preparatory School for Overseas Chinese Students (NUPS).

Founded in 1955, NUPS is the tenth oldest among 160 higher learning institutions in Taiwan and bears its commitment to carrying out a historic and wide-ranging mission. NPUS has changed its name into National Taiwan Normal University Division of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students since the consolidation with NationalTaiwanNormalUniversity.

This school is the only institution providing university preparatory education to overseas Chinese. It provides the impetus for a wide range of students to receive higher education, enhance language abilities, and acquire in a genuine Taiwan setting.

The campus is located in Lin-Kou, about 17 kilometers from TaipeiCity, covers 23 hectares of land. School buildings occupy more than 66,000 square meters, encompassing an administration building, teaching buildings, a science building, a multi-purpose gymnasium, as well as a standard athletic and sports field, all of which provide a distinctive and distinguished learning environment for the students.

Admission:

Admission is limited to those who were born outside of Taiwan and have lived overseas continuously for at least 6 years, at the same time, they must be high school graduates in their native country or at least holding a high school equivalency. Prospective students would be directly assigned to our school or other universities after taking the University & NUPS Joint Entrance Commission for Overseas Chinese Students.

As for those who are not content with their previous assignments and wish to vary educational plans, they may apply to transfer to our school again. To assure the optimal re-location, the students have to complete another one-year study at our school.

70% of our graduates are admitted to either public universities or private medical schools each year for holding strong academic records from the preparatory program.

Academics:

Students are distributed impartially into classes so that they will choose to study in their fields of interests from any of the following divisions: Division I, which comprises subjects as arts, humanities, law, business, management and education, DivisionII—science and engineering, and Division Ⅲ—medicine and agriculture. These instructional programs are scheduled to be completed within one year.

Required courses include Chinese, English, mathematics, civil constitution, history, geography, computer science, and physical education. Uniform textbooks are compiled in accordance with domestic and overseas senior school teaching materials, freshmen curricula from local universities, along with students' academic proficiencies. Selective courses are given according to the division in which the students are enrolled. Students will spend 37~39 class hours per week on campus.

There are a total of two midterms, two final exams, one graduation exam, and one makeup exam within one academic year. As all students strive hard to get good grades to enter a university of their choice, the campus is permeated with studious atmosphere.

A special supplementary class, targeting for native Indonesian, has put up for those who do not have a sufficient command of Mandarin or demonstrate an unsatisfactory academic performance. They may get into the regular preparatory program if they pass the previous-mentioned one-year course. What is more, a complimentary three-month after-school program is scheduled in the evenings to give extra boosts to students' intellectual achievements. Our comprehensively planned curriculum should kindle students’ interest in Chinese and enhance their language proficiency level.

Student Life:

All students live in dormitories. Each student has his/her own bed, desk, and wardrobe in the room; at the same time, special aids and equipments are available for disabled ones. To assure the optimal learning environment, our school is committed to safety and wellness education with free-of-charge medical services and a constantly patrolled campus.

Students from low income families may apply for stipends, while those who are not receiving it may apply to enter an on-campus work-study program. Our school recognizes the importance of educational financing and is awarding to potential recipients based on need and merit. The annual amounts of these awards are about NT$600,000. 54% of the students are currently either receiving the scholarship or attending the work-study program.

Academic excellence has been the hallmark of this school. We are proud to attribute this to our devoted faculty and student body in creating professional instructions and dynamic classes. We will continue to get more admission quotas so that our dedicated students will have better chances to enter their desirable universities.
